Garden of Eden
Download PDF file (31mb)

My Garden of Eden is a guide for the care and maintenance of plants along the walkway to my home.
The first section passes along the top of the dyke, and then the book moves to various gardens on platforms , and finally to the larger terraces around my home ~ all on pillars.
Location is between the Pomelo orchards, and the Khlong Butterfly, less than 100 meters from the River Tha Chin (official name; Nakhon ChaiSi).
You can download My Garden of Eden by clicking on the pic above, it is in PDF format (low resolution; 31 MB).

Upon completion of the book, various persons in the community came to visit this Garden of Eden ~ through this, they opened their thoughts to various options for their use of this fertile land.
This year, 2021, the normal flood-season was much worse than in previous years.  It was easy to see that those farmers that tended their land in the best way for the entire community ~ these were the farmers that lost the most with the flood.  It became obvious that something more than the water was causing this devastating situation.

Harmony with Nature
Download PDF file (14mb)

Living in Harmony with Nature.
The community searched for ideas that would assure that the farmers had revenue, and also felt it was essential to encourage their efforts to work in harmony with the natural flow of water.

I felt that the concept of my home and garden on pillars was healthy, both for the environment, and the community. They then asked if I could explain this idea ~ consequently, I described in more detail my thoughts in this brochure Living in Harmony with Nature.
The central proposition is to maintain this environment with as much Biodiversity as possible. This would create an attractive environment for a wide-variety of visitors to stay in small bungalows. For example, some might be glad to stay and work with the farmers. The first-priority would be the protection of nature ~ assure that those participating would encourage an authentic-environment in harmony with the natural surroundings.

This idea then grew as more farmers could see the advantages; and the types of visitors with an interest in such a project also grew; for example, those working on computer-remote, researchers, retired persons, students of nature, and more.

The first-draft of these ideas are in the small brochure Living in Harmony with Nature.
Brochure can be downloaded in PDF format, (14 MB) click on picture

> Biodiversity & Community & Visitors, these are three pillars that hold together a concept for a community to live together in Harmony.
Biodiversity; in the authentic natural environment
> Community; will need to work together to assure that everyone benefits

> Visitors; will provide revenue for needed services that farmers can provide.

This series of seven videos show various aspects of this vibrant, and beautiful community.
They also show the flood which has become much worse.  Everyone knows that the “land-fill” is contributing to the problem, however, it is difficult to find solutions to stop this destructive trend.
The goal is to implement a sustainable-project ~ it must assure revenue for the local community, and protect the environment.

Harmony Tour
(3.01 minutes)

Harmony Tour
The mega-city-Bangkok is spreading like wildfire into the beautiful orchards on this Peninsula. The community wants to preserve their agriculture land, however, this can often be a delicate balance to assure that the land remains healthy and everyone can thrive. This short “spin-on-motorbike” provides a taste of the environment.

River & Morning Glory

  River & Morning Glory
Visitors always enjoy spending time on this Peninsula, and they can also play a role in the economy of the community. With this, we try to show how the visitors can become a part of the solution ~ that is, assure that no part of the environment is destroyed to accommodate them. An Authentic-Environment for people that truly love nature ~ and a sensational boat ride.

Koh Lad e Tan Nov 2021

Koh Lad e Tan Nov 2021
Unfortunately, the land on this Peninsula is changing on a daily basis, especially because of land-fill. The natural ebb & flow of the River water has become ever more extreme because the water cannot flow as it should naturally.
Here we can see what happens when the water overflows the dykes ~ most of the trees in the orchard died!

Flood 3 December
(3.03 minutes)
  Flood 3 December
This video shows one of the orchards that was located behind a recent land-fill project. The dykes that had sheltered this land for 10 years could not provide the usual protection. The natural ebb & flow of the tide was broken and the water could not exit to the river.

Land-fill is not a sustainable solution for everyone in the community ~ alternative solutions need to be integrated so that the environment remains healthy for humans and nature!

Flood October 2021
(2.28 minutes)

Flood October 2021
Here is a part of the Garden of Eden! This house and garden stands on pillars ~ as can be seen, the lower terrace flooded, however, due to the various levels, this can be managed. Living in Harmony in this location means having mangrove trees that thrive with the ebb & flow of the tide. Maintaining healthy balance of nature, along with existing dyke-protected farm-land, would allow more people in the community to thrive economically.

The Pomelo fruit (Som-O) from this Peninsula are considered as the best in the world ~ because the land is particularly fertile, and the climate is perfect for the Pomelo trees to thrive. However the roots can stand in water only three days before they die from root-rot.

Neighbor’s Pomelo farm
(3.18 minutes)
  Neighbor’s Pomelo farm
Here is my Neighbor’s Pomelo orchard, first we take a tour in the small canal within the orchard basin. The dykes surround this basin and through this the water level can be managed. Later, we are in a small boat on the other side of the dyke ~ on the khlong/canal. This video was made in 2017, obviously, there is harmony in the nature on both sides of the dyke.

Waltzing on the Water
(6.48 minutes)

Waltzing on the Water
They did not block the natural ebb & flow ~ they were Waltzing with the Water!
Here we can watch the activity on this typical small khlong near to the river. This video was made in 2018 from my home, and one can see the dyke protecting the Pomelo orchard on the opposite side of the khlong . For more than 10 years this farmer & his wife have maintained the orchard and the dyke surrounding it. The video follows events through about six weeks. At the start, one can see that the dyke is more than one meter above water level. One can also see the farmer maneuver the large boat along the khlong loaded with dirt, he is maintaining the dyke protecting his land. As is obvious, after the rain the water level continues to rise, and near the end of the video, the large boat with dirt is almost as highs the dyke ~ the water level has become dangerously high. This was in 2018, and the Pomelo orchard did not flood at that time.

Later that year, the Pomelo orchard neighboring this, further up the khlong, was destroyed, a major land-fill was made, and a large Temple was constructed. The upper end of this khlong was blocked! In 2021, this entire region had major flooding. This orchard could not be protected because the water could not flow as it had for centuries ~ it was blocked at the end of this khlong by the new temple, therefore, the water-level for everyone else just kept rising, and became destructive flooding!

This has left the local community worried about their survival and searching for solutions.
